What are the options for replacing a missing tooth?

Are you missing a tooth and feeling a bit self-conscious about it? Restorative dentistry has come a long way in recent years. A dental implant or bridge not only replaces a missing tooth, but they look so natural that no-one would even know it wasn’t an original tooth.

Do I need to replace a missing tooth?

Even if your missing tooth isn’t noticeable to others, it’s still important to replace it. Not only can this restore a beautiful smile; it promotes dental health as well. Filling in empty spaces in the mouth helps to prevent cavities in the remaining teeth because any gaps are vulnerable spots for plaque-causing bacteria to build up in.

Missing teeth also put extra stress on your remaining natural teeth because you don’t have as much surface area to chew with. And depending on which tooth is missing, you may find it a bit harder to speak clearly.

There are two main options when it comes to replacing a missing tooth: dental implants and dental bridges.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a long-lasting solution for tooth or teeth replacement. They are made of biocompatible titanium and are inserted surgically so that it fuses with the jawbone. This process is called “osseointegration”. Like the roots of natural teeth, they provide a permanent anchor for replacement teeth, including crowns and bridges.

Dental implants are a popular solution for people who have lost one or more teeth due to tooth decay or injury. However, implants may not be for everyone. If you have damaged jaw bone, bone loss or health issues, you may find that they are not the best solution for you.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a way of restoring your smile when a tooth is missing by “bridging” the gap that has been created. The bridge consists of a false tooth (or teeth) that is anchored into place by crowns attached to the adjacent teeth.

We often recommend a bridge for patients who have lost a tooth, but still have teeth on either side of the gap and those teeth would also benefit from a crown.

Which option is best to replace a missing tooth?

Choosing the best option depends on various factors, including but not limited to, your overall oral health, budget, and personal preferences.

Dental implants are a long-lasting solution that helps to prevent bone loss, without compromising the health of surrounding teeth. However, being a surgical procedure, they are more expensive compared to dental bridges and generally are a multi-step process taking up to a few months.

On the other hand, dental bridges offer a quicker solution for replacing missing teeth, and are generally less expensive than implants. However, they do involve other teeth which may increase the chance of future complications. They also don’t prevent bone loss in the area of the missing tooth.

Ultimately, the best way to determine the right option for you is to consult with your dentist. They can assess your specific situation, discuss the pros and cons of each option, and help you make an informed decision that aligns with your needs.
